A loop that smells of the Jura pastures

From La Pessette, above Bassins, the Alpage Trail unfolds a lovely loop through the pastures and forests of Vaud Jura. It's one of those walks we love because it brings together everything that makes for a good family outing: fresh air, animals in the meadows, panoramas of the Lake Geneva basin, and, for the foodies, mountain huts where you can taste the AOP cheese from the region.

It's an educational route: along the way, you learn about the life of the alpages, the work of farmers, and the nature that surrounds us. Expect about 6 km for a fairly easy loop (about 1h30 of walking, to be confirmed on-site according to the chosen path). Free of charge, it is perfectly suited for a half-day in the great outdoors.

What your children will discover

The Alpage Trail is a true open book on the Jura mountains. Children encounter cows in the pastures, discover how cheese is made, and learn to recognize trees and flowers along the panels. It's concrete, lively, and speaks directly to their curiosity.

The route alternates between different atmospheres: the wide-open spaces of the alpages, where the view extends far over the Lake Geneva basin, and the coolness of the spruce forests. Depending on the weather, the panorama can stretch all the way to the lake and the Alps. Enough to nourish the eyes as much as the legs.

What to do there and the atmosphere on site

You walk at your own pace, stop to read the panels, observe the herds, and regain strength in a mountain hut. The atmosphere is typically Jurassian: relaxed, warm, and focused on local produce. The cheese stop is often the favorite moment for families, both young and old.

Picnic areas allow you to put down your bag and catch your breath while facing the landscape. Children run in the grass, and parents enjoy the view. It's an outing without time constraints, where you take the time to savor the mountains.

Before you go

• Recommended age: from 5 years old, children can complete the route at their own pace. Suitable for teenagers as well.
• Duration: about 1h30 of walking for the loop of approximately 6 km, to be confirmed on-site. Plan for more time with breaks.
• Price: free for the trail. The mountain huts and cheese purchases are paid.
• Stroller accessibility: natural and hilly terrain, not very suitable for strollers. Baby carriers are recommended for little ones.
• Transport: Bassins is in the Nyon district. Easy access by car to La Pessette; from Nyon (CFF line), plan for a regional connection.
• What to bring: good walking shoes, water, snacks, and cash for the hut and AOP cheese.
• Ideal season: from spring to autumn, when the alpages are active and the huts are open.

Parents' tips

• Bring some cash: tasting AOP cheese at the mountain hut is a highlight of the walk.
• Read the panels with the children; the educational aspect turns the walk into a little treasure hunt.
• Check the opening times of the huts before you leave, as they depend on the season.
• Keep your distance from the herds and keep any dogs on a leash near the cows.
• Start early in the summer to avoid the heat on the exposed sections.
