Vineyards, a castle and wild rivers west of Geneva

The Mandement is the western end of the canton of Geneva, vineyard country, with slopes running down towards the Rhône. Dardagny is its highest village, with a castle, narrow lanes and cellars that open to visitors in season. This is not a region of attractions: there is no theme park and no children's museum, and that is exactly what makes it a good Sunday outing. You come here to walk between the rows of vines, to drop down to the Allondon, whose pebble bed feels like a small wild beach, and to breathe out fifteen minutes from the city. The train reaches the bottom of the slopes, which makes the trip possible without a car, provided you accept a climb. Allow half a day, or a full one if you plan to walk.

Plan the family outing

Getting there, weather, ages, budget: the answers before you go.

Getting there

The Léman Express links Genève-Cornavin to La Plaine in around twenty minutes, stopping at Satigny and Russin in the middle of the vineyards. La Plaine sits within the commune of Dardagny, at the foot of the slopes. By car, leave the motorway at Vernier and climb the route du Mandement. There are a few parking spaces in the village, though not many on harvest weekends.

Good to know: from La Plaine station up to Dardagny village is about two kilometres of steady climbing. It is manageable on foot with children who walk well, much less so with a loaded pushchair.

With toddlers

Dardagny village itself is flat, lanes and fountains included, and a half-hour loop covers the whole of it. The banks of the Allondon are the other good option: the path follows the river with almost no gradient, and the pebble bed keeps children busy for hours. The tracks through the vines, by contrast, are steep and stony, so save those for a carrier. There is little shade on the slopes in high summer, so bring hats and water bottles.

The vineyard year

In spring the slopes are green and the paths empty, which is the best time to walk. In summer, head down to the Allondon to paddle, bearing in mind that it is a nature reserve: stay on the paths and take nothing away with you. September and October bring the grape harvest, when the Mandement is at its liveliest, with tractors everywhere and cellars open to visitors. In winter, the bare landscape and the mist off the Rhône are worth the trip for a short walk followed by a hot chocolate.

Frequently asked questions

How do we reach Dardagny by public transport?
The Léman Express serves La Plaine, within the commune of Dardagny, in about twenty minutes from Genève-Cornavin. From the station up to the village is a further two kilometres of steady climbing. With children who walk well it makes a pleasant approach, but allow time and carry water in summer.
Can children swim in the Allondon?
It is more paddling than swimming, in shallow pools between the pebbles, which suits younger children very well. The site is a nature reserve: stay on the paths, keep dogs on a lead and take nothing away. Water level and temperature vary a lot with the season, so check before you build a day around it.
When is the best time to visit the Mandement?
Spring gives the nicest walking, with green slopes and empty paths. In summer, head for the banks of the Allondon instead, as the vineyard slopes offer little shade. September and October are the liveliest, with the harvest, the tractors and cellars open to visitors, but also the busiest at weekends.
