The Veveyse is the Fribourg district wedged between Vevey and Bulle, on the first slopes of the Prealps. Châtel-Saint-Denis is its main town, and Les Paccots, ten minutes higher up, is its mountain village: a plateau of alpine pastures where the recreation area gathers a large natural playground, picnic tables and trails short enough for small legs. In winter the same plateau turns into a family ski area with gentle runs, sledging and marked snowshoe routes. Down in the valley, Châtel-Saint-Denis keeps its community cinema, the Sirius, which programmes family screenings, and the loop around Lac de Lussy takes half an hour with a pushchair. This is a region of ups and downs: the weather in the valley tells you nothing about the weather at Les Paccots, and the reverse is just as true.

Plan the family outing

Getting there, weather, ages, budget: the answers before you go.

Getting there

The TPF line from Palézieux to Bulle stops at Châtel-Saint-Denis, with train connections at Palézieux from Lausanne or Fribourg. A TPF bus then climbs from the station to Les Paccots in about fifteen minutes, running more often in season. By car, the A12 motorway serves the district at the Châtel-Saint-Denis exit, five minutes from the centre, and the road up to Les Paccots is steady rather than difficult.

Worth knowing: after fresh snow the car park at Les Paccots is full before 10am and the access road queues up. Taking the bus from the station avoids the problem entirely.

With toddlers

The recreation area at Les Paccots is the strongest card in the district under the age of six: flat ground, wooden play structures, a stream, sheltered tables and mountain cafés nearby. A standard pushchair copes with the main paths, and an all-terrain one opens up the surrounding trails. Down in the valley, the loop around Lac de Lussy is short, shaded and flat, which suits the end of a long day.

Family winters

Les Paccots stays a small resort, and that matters for a first winter: wide gentle runs, short lift queues, mountain restaurants you can walk to. Sledging fills the days when skiing still feels too early, and the marked snowshoe routes make a family outing possible without complicated gear. When the valley sits under grey cloud, this plateau is often in the sun, and the Sirius cinema in Châtel-Saint-Denis is the fallback on genuinely bad days.

Frequently asked questions

Can you reach Les Paccots without a car?
Yes. Take the TPF train on the Palézieux to Bulle line as far as Châtel-Saint-Denis, then a TPF bus up to Les Paccots in about fifteen minutes from the station. Services run more often during the ski season and school holidays. It is also the surest way to avoid the packed car park after fresh snow.
Does the Veveyse work with a pushchair?
The recreation area at Les Paccots is easy with a pushchair on the main paths, and the picnic tables sit close to the car park. The loop around Lac de Lussy in Châtel-Saint-Denis is flat, short and shaded. For the pasture trails above the resort, an all-terrain pushchair or a carrier works far better.
What can you do in the Veveyse when it rains?
The Sirius cinema in Châtel-Saint-Denis is community-run and regularly programmes family screenings, usually at weekends. Les Paccots has several mountain cafés and restaurants where you can wait out a shower in the warm. It is also common for valley rain to be nothing more than mist above 1000 metres, so it is worth checking before you give up on the day.
