Stroller-friendly walks: our favourite routes in French-speaking Switzerland

Having a baby or a toddler doesn’t mean giving up on nature outings: you just need to know the right routes. Here are our favourite walks where the stroller rolls easily, from the shores of Lake Geneva to the wildlife parks.

We have gone for flat or almost flat routes, with things to spot along the way, a playground or a snack corner at the end, and easy access by public transport wherever possible.

The loop around Lac des Vernes, in Meyrin

A small lake fringed with reeds with an easy path and observation platforms: you can look out for herons, dragonflies and frogs at stroller height. Allow 30 to 60 quiet minutes, reachable by TPG tram.

The lakeside promenade in Coppet

From the harbour in Coppet, the walk along Lake Geneva is completely flat, right by the water. You watch the CGN boats go by, and you can even hop aboard for a mini cruise to Nyon: the stroller comes on board without any fuss.

The Jardin botanique in Geneva

A large free park by the lake, with tropical greenhouses, an animal park and vast lawns. The paths are perfect for a stroller, and there is always a surprising animal or plant to point at.

The Sauvabelin woods, in Lausanne

The walk around Lake Sauvabelin is flat and shaded: ducks, goats from the neighbouring animal park and a playground to round off the outing. The easiest access with a stroller is by TL bus.

Le Domaine des Îles, in Sion

Between the lake, the beaches and wide open spaces, the flat paths of the estate are effortless with a stroller. You picnic, you play, and the older children cycle while the youngest naps on the move.

The archaeological park in Vidy, Lausanne

The remains of Lousonna can be explored freely in a flat park by the lake. Carry on along the Vidy quays, with their lawns and playgrounds: kilometres of promenade without a single step.

La Garenne, in Le Vaud

Fancy some animals? The La Garenne wildlife park says most of its routes are stroller-friendly, among lynx, wolves and bearded vultures. There are a few slopes, but nothing insurmountable, and a playground for brothers and sisters.

Our stroller tips

• Choose a stroller with large wheels for park paths: city models struggle on gravel.
• Set off after the first morning nap: baby makes the most of it, and the paths are still quiet.
• Recent rain? Dirt paths turn into wheel traps. Stick to quays and tarmac paths instead.
• For mountain and forest trails, the baby carrier still rules: keep the stroller for the routes listed here.
