Cave of the Giants and Head of the Giant in Saillon
A easy walk in Saillon (VS) combining a natural cave and a spectacular viewpoint. Free, short, and fun, perfect for sparking the curiosity of children from spring to autumn.
A true nature adventure above Saillon (without going far)
If you're looking for an outing that differs from the “wide path + benches every 200 m” stroll, the Caverne des Géants and the Tête du Géant, above Saillon, hit the mark!
Here, we ascend gently among the terraced vineyards, touch the rock, observe the landscape… and eventually enter a real cave, cool and mysterious.
Nothing extreme, but just enough adventure for the kids to feel like they’re experiencing something special.
The big advantage: it’s short, free, and yet offers a change of scenery. In a maximum of an hour and a half, you go from vineyard to rock, from sun to shade, from panorama to exploration.
Why kids get hooked right away
From the very first meters, the imagination takes off. A rock shaped like a face, walls striped by time, a slightly dark cave entrance… no need to force it: stories come naturally.
- The youngest play explorers.
- The older ones look for shapes in the rock or wonder how all this was formed.
- Everyone loves the contrast between the warmth of the hillside and the coolness of the cave.
Without realizing it, they touch on geology, erosion, and the Valais vineyard landscape. And above all, they walk with pleasure, because the path varies all the time.
In practical terms, how does the walk go
- Route: loop starting from the village of Saillon. Gradual ascent to the Tête du Géant, passing through the Caverne des Géants, then returning via a path through the vineyards.
- Duration: expect 1 to 1.5 hours with children, including breaks.
- Level: easy to moderate. A few steps and rocky passages, but nothing technical.
- Atmosphere: calm, nature, with a very beautiful viewpoint over the Rhône valley and a welcome “coolness” break in the cave.
This is not a walk to break records! It’s a leisurely outing, ideal for letting kids observe, touch, and ask questions.
Is it suitable for your family?
- Age: perfect from 5 years old for children who walk independently.
The younger ones can follow in a baby carrier, but you need to be comfortable on rocky terrain. - Strollers: no, clearly not suitable.
- Safety: the path is well marked, but some areas are steep. Keep a close eye near the edges and at the cave entrance.
- Conditions: to be avoided after rain (slippery rocks) or during a heatwave.
What to better prepare (and what we often forget)
- Good shoes (not just smooth sneakers)
- Water, especially in summer
- Hat and sunscreen for the exposed ascent
- A light jacket: even in the middle of summer, the cave is cool
- A snack for the panorama break (always a good idea)
What this outing really brings to children
- Natural curiosity: observing the rock, the hillside plants, listening to the echo.
- Motor skills: walking on uneven terrain, managing small obstacles.
- Confidence: exploring a cave “like grown-ups,” while being supervised.
- Sensations: changing light, coolness, silence… simple but impactful experiences.
This kind of outing often leaves more memories than a traditional playground.
Our parent tips (tested and approved)
- Give each child a headlamp: it transforms the cave into an exploration mission.
- Take a break before entering the cave to explain what they will see.
- Start early in the morning or late in the day in summer: the hillside is very sunny.
- After the walk, take the time to stroll through the medieval village of Saillon: perfect for extending the outing without immediately taking the car again.
