Below the village of La Sarraz, between the castle and the countryside of the Gros-de-Vaud, the Piscine de la Venoge is the summer meeting point for families in the region. Run by an intermunicipal association, it brings together everything you expect from a good village pool: pools for every level, permanently heated water, a large green area and a relaxed atmosphere. The adjoining Camping des Buis gives the site a little holiday feel. Half an hour from Lausanne, it’s the perfect spot for a swimming day away from the crowds of the big aquatic centres.

What your children will discover

Three pools share the site, one for each age: a shaded paddling pool where the little ones splash about safely, a medium pool with reduced depth for those learning to swim, and an Olympic 50-metre pool where the older ones swim their lengths. For thrills, the water slide is a unanimous hit with children, while the two diving boards (1 metre and 3 metres) attract teenagers looking for a challenge. Between two swims, the playground and the two table-tennis tables take over: nobody gets bored.

What you do there and the atmosphere on site

You lay the towels on the grass, in the shade or the sun depending on the mood, and alternate between swims, slides and games of table tennis. The atmosphere is that of a village pool where everyone crosses paths: local families, the morning swimmers (the main pool is reserved for them from 7am to 9am on Tuesdays and Fridays) and the campers from next door. The relaxation area with deck chairs and shaded spots lets parents catch their breath while the children go back and forth to the slide. The on-site restaurant is handy for lunch or a snack, and the lawn happily welcomes picnics.

Tips from parents

• On fine days, arrive early in the morning to pick a shaded spot near the paddling pool.
• The reduced rate in the late afternoon is perfect for a swim after school or work.
• With non-swimmers, stay in the medium pool and the paddling pool, more reassuring than the main pool.
• Keep an eye on children near the diving boards and the slide at busy times.
• Round off the day with a walk to the Tine de Conflens or a visit to the Château de La Sarraz, just a few minutes away.
