Free activities for children in Valais: nature, caves and fresh air

Valais has a well-kept secret: its finest family outings often cost nothing. Caves, walkways, parks by the water and alpine pastures: here is our 100% free selection.

After our guides to free activities in Geneva and in Lausanne, we head for Valais, where the mountains generously give away what others charge for.

Small nature adventures

• La Caverne des Géants and la Tête du Géant, in Saillon: a 1 to 1.5 hour loop between vineyards, a natural cave and a spectacular viewpoint. Free, short and unforgettable from age 5.
• The Dala gorges walkway, in Loèche-les-Bains: clinging to the cliff above the thermal springs, it offers a real thrill without spending a centime.
• The Frassenaye waterfall, in Val-d’Illiez: 45 to 90 minutes of cool trail up to the falls. Free access, magic included.

A full day by the water

Le Domaine des Îles, in Sion, remains the safe bet for Valais families: access to the grounds is free, and between the lake, the beaches, the playgrounds and the flat paths, you can spend the day there without opening your wallet (only some operators’ activities are charged). Right next door, Les Îles Vapeur Parc rounds off the outing for a few francs if the urge for a little train wins out.

Animals roaming free (or nearly)

Le Mini Zoo de Jorasse, in Ovronnaz: an alpine animal park at 2,000 m, free to visit from late June to October, with goats, alpacas and free pony rides. Only the chairlift up is charged: once you are up there, everything is a gift.

Culture without a ticket

• The cantonal museums of Valais — the Musée de la nature, the Musée d’Art — regularly offer free entry on the first Sunday of the month: check the conditions on their official websites and plan your weekend in Sion accordingly.
• Old towns can be explored freely: the castles of Valère and Tourbillon in Sion from the outside, the medieval town of Saillon, the Roman amphitheatre in Martigny. All settings that take children travelling without an entrance ticket.

And there’s more: the bisses

You can’t talk about free things in Valais without mentioning the bisses, those historic irrigation channels followed by flat, shaded paths. Perfect with children: the running water motivates the walking, and the climb stays gentle. Ask local tourist offices for a bisse suited to your children’s age.

Our tips for a 100% free Valais

• The picnic is king: fountains and barbecue areas are plentiful along the trails.
• Check the museums’ free-entry dates before planning the weekend.
• In summer, set off early: the Rhône valley heats up quickly and walks are best enjoyed in the morning.
• Postal buses serve most walk starting points: handy for linear routes.
