Morges as a family: what to do with children?

With its castle at the water’s edge, its flower-lined quays and its renowned programme for young audiences, Morges is a family destination that deserves far more than a stop on the road between Lausanne and Geneva.

Thirty minutes from Geneva and ten from Lausanne by train, the town is perfect for a family day out: everything is walkable from the station, and the lake is never far away.

The castle and the quays: the must-see

The Château de Morges, a Savoyard fortress set on the shore of Lake Geneva, houses several museums to discover as a family. Even without going in, its silhouette and the neighbouring harbour are worth the stroll. Check opening hours and family activities on the official website.

Right next door, the Parc de l’Indépendance offers lawns, old trees and a playground: this is where the famous Fête de la Tulipe takes place every spring, a colourful event much loved by children. The quays are for wandering, ice cream in hand, with a view of Mont Blanc on a clear day.

Theatre and shows: the young audience season at Beausobre

This is one of Morges’ great assets: Le Théâtre de Beausobre rolls out a young audience programme designed for families every season, from puppetry and storytelling to musical theatre and circus. A lovely way to give children their first big emotions of live performance. Check the programme and book ahead for the most popular shows.

Getting active by the lake

• CityGolf Morges-Préverenges: a playful course along the shores of Lake Geneva, club in hand, to (re)discover the town while having fun, from age 6. Our favourite way of visiting Morges with children who don’t like “visiting”.
• Le Club Nautique Morgien: at the foot of the castle, the CNM sailing school introduces children to Optimist dinghies from age 6 and runs summer camps for 6 to 18 year olds during the Vaud school holidays. The great Lake Geneva adventure, ten minutes’ walk from the station.
• Swimming: in the warm season, Morges families head for the beach and the pool at the Parc des Sports, by the lake. Check opening hours and prices on the town’s website.
• Playgrounds: as well as the one in the Parc de l’Indépendance, the town’s quays and parks have several more, perfect for a break between discoveries.

And nearby

Morges is an excellent base for exploring La Côte and heading towards Lausanne:

• Ten minutes by train, the lakeshore at Vidy with the Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy and Le P’tit train at the Parc Bourget.
• On the La Côte side, the Château de Rolle and the beach in Rolle are a quarter of an hour away.
• For animal lovers, the La Garenne wildlife park, in Le Vaud, showcases European wildlife all year round.
