A trail along the water, between footbridges, waterfalls, and the famous stone bridge of Saut de Brot. A true nature immersion just a stone's throw from Neuchâtel.

Illustration of the Gorges de l'Areuse in Boudry: a family hiking on the trail along the turquoise river, with waterfalls, wooded rocky cliffs, and the famous arched stone bridge of the Saut de Brot.

The Experience

We take you along the Areuse, this turquoise river that has carved the rocks of Val-de-Travers. The route features walkways, metal stairs, rocky passages, and high cliffs. The highlight is the Saut de Brot, a magnificent 18th-century stone arch bridge, undoubtedly the most photographed spot in the gorges. A fresh and spectacular walk, perfect for breathing in the family.

The Route

The classic trail connects Noiraigue to Boudry, about 11 to 12 km for 3 hours of walking. The most impressive part descends from Champ-du-Moulin to Boudry (about 7.5 km, 2 hours). The path is marked and secure, with barriers and steps, but it remains sporty in places.

For What Age?

This is an ideal walk for children around 7 years old, when they walk well and know how to stay cautious near the water. The route is not suitable for strollers. For younger ones or small legs, it's better to choose a short section rather than the full route.

Practical Information

  • Departure: Noiraigue station or Champ-du-Moulin station (arrival at Boudry)
  • Duration: about 3 hours for the full route, 2 hours from Champ-du-Moulin
  • Difficulty: family-friendly but sporty, significant negative elevation on the descent
  • Access: free, outdoors, open all year round (best from March to October)
  • What to Bring: good walking shoes, water, a picnic

How to Get There

The easiest way is by train. From Neuchâtel, take the CFF train to Noiraigue or Champ-du-Moulin, then return from Boudry. This is the whole point of the linear route: you walk in one direction and return by public transport, without retracing your steps.

Safety and Useful Information

The trail runs close to the river: keep children near you, especially at the water's edge and on the walkways. In wet weather, the passages become very slippery. Good walking shoes are truly essential. Also, consider a tasty stop at the Restaurant de la Truite in Champ-du-Moulin.
