A massive horseshoe-shaped rocky circus, dizzying cliffs, and free-roaming ibex: the Creux du Van is one of the most beautiful hikes in the Neuchâtel Jura, perfect for families with good walking children.

Illustration of the Creux du Van in Noiraigue (Val-de-Travers, Neuchâtel): the vast horseshoe-shaped rocky cirque with high limestone cliffs, a ibex on the plateau, and a family of hikers admiring the natural amphitheater.

The Experience

Imagine a rock wall shaped like a horseshoe, over a kilometer long, with cliffs about 160 meters high. This is the Creux du Van, a natural circus carved by erosion over millennia, straddling the cantons of Neuchâtel and Vaud. From the top of the ridges, the panorama opens up to the Val-de-Travers, the lakes, and, in good weather, the Alps.

The site is also a nature reserve. With a bit of patience and binoculars, you can observe ibex and chamois, often at the beginning or end of the day. A true nature outing, free and on a grand scale.

The Route

From Noiraigue, you generally ascend via the Ferme Robert and then the famous 14 Contours trail, a series of switchbacks that climbs up to the plateau. Once at the top, the path runs along the edge of the circus: this is where the view is most impressive.

It's a sporty hike, with a good ascent. Depending on the chosen route (longer or shorter loop), expect several hours of walking. It's better to start early and allow time for breaks.

For What Age?

The Creux du Van is suitable for families with children who are already good walkers, preferably from 10 years old. The ascent is long and the elevation gain significant; it's not a walk for strollers or toddlers.

One essential point: at the summit, the cliffs are not secured by barriers. Children must remain within reach and at a distance from the edge at all times.

Practical Information

  • Departure: Noiraigue train station (Val-de-Travers, canton of Neuchâtel)
  • Duration: to be checked according to the route (several hours round trip)
  • Elevation Gain: to be checked (significant ascent to the plateau)
  • Difficulty: sporty hike, for good walkers
  • To Bring: good walking shoes, water, snacks, binoculars, sun and rain protection

How to Get There

The simplest way is by train to Noiraigue station, on the Val-de-Travers line. From there, you can walk to the Ferme Robert (about 50 minutes), then tackle the ascent. The Ferme Robert is also accessible by car for those who want to shorten the walk.

Safety and Important to Know

  • Unsecured Cliffs: the edge of the circus has no barriers. Keep children close to you and away from the void. Not recommended for people prone to vertigo.
  • Weather: avoid in fog, rain, or frozen ground; the recommended season is from spring to autumn.
  • Water and Supplies: bring water; some mountain farms (restaurant-farms) offer regional specialties along the way.
  • Protected Wildlife: observe animals from a distance, without approaching or feeding them.
