Château de Chenaux in Estavayer-le-Lac: a medieval keep by the lake

Fancy sending your children up a real medieval keep? The Château de Chenaux has watched over the old town of Estavayer-le-Lac since the 13th century. We take you to the top of its tower, from where the view runs straight over the rooftops and Lake Neuchâtel.

A Savoyard castle overlooking the old town of Estavayer-le-Lac

The Château de Chenaux in Estavayer-le-Lac is the postcard image that sets the town's medieval scene. Built in 1284 by Pierre d'Estavayer and his brother Guillaume, it follows the so-called “Savoyard square” plan and owes its name to the wide ditches (the “chenaux”) that protected it. Over the centuries it was enlarged, fortified, then taken by Fribourg in 1475. Now owned by the State of Fribourg, it still houses the prefecture, continuing the tradition of the bailiffs of old. For families, the appeal comes down to one word: the keep, which you can climb to discover one of the finest panoramas in the region.

What your children will discover

From the outside, the castle is already impressive with its thick walls, its drawbridge and its fortress silhouette. Once over the bridge, the entrance to the keep is on the left: it is the only part open for visits, the interior of the castle remaining closed to the public. Inside the tower, your children climb the floors as in a real fortified castle, pass two former wooden prison cells and reach the very top, in the old dovecote. From there, the panoramic view opens onto the rooftops of the old town and Lake Neuchâtel.

What you do there and the atmosphere on site

The visit to the keep is short, free and ideal as a stop on a walk through the old town. You climb at your own pace, stop to look at the old stones, and search for the lake through the openings. Around the castle, the gardens and grounds can be explored freely all year round, perfect for a breather or a picnic. To go further, the Tourist Office offers a two-hour guided tour linking the medieval lanes, the half-timbered houses and the keep (by reservation).

Before you go

  • Recommended age: from 4 (the keep's staircase calls for motivated little legs and an eye on the youngest).
  • Duration: 30 to 45 min for the keep; allow 2 h for the guided tour of the town and keep.
  • Price: access to the keep is free. Guided tour: CHF 120 per group (max 12 people), to be confirmed with the Tourist Office.
  • Booking: none for the open-access keep; booking required for the guided tour (Tourist Office).
  • Stroller / wheelchair accessibility: the keep is visited via stairs, not very suited to strollers and reduced mobility; gardens and grounds more accessible. To be confirmed according to your needs.
  • Transport: Estavayer-le-Lac CFF station, then a few minutes' walk to the old town. By car, blue-zone parking nearby.
  • What to bring: good shoes for the steps, a jacket (it is cool in the tower), water.
  • Best season: the keep is open every day from 9 am to 7 pm, from early May to the end of October (until 2 November 2026). Out of season, access is possible on request to the prefecture.

Tips from parents

  • Combine the climb up the keep with a stroll through the medieval old town: lanes, half-timbered houses and colourful facades are a big hit with children.
  • Extend the outing by the lake: the Estavayer beach and mini-golf are very close for a full family day.
  • Hold the little ones' hands firmly on the staircase and at the top of the tower.
  • Turn the climb into a treasure hunt: spot the prison cells, the old dovecote, then Lake Neuchâtel from the top.
  • Check the times and arrangements (keep, guided tour) on the official website before setting off, especially out of season.
