The Val d'Anniviers climbs out of Sierre through a spectacular series of hairpins, crosses the Niouc bridge, then opens out at Vissoie before splitting towards Grimentz, Zinal, Saint-Luc and Chandolin. It is probably the Valais valley best set up for families. In Grimentz everything is within walking distance: the old village with its sun-blackened facades, the free pumptrack, the Clos des Frès playground, the forest trail with Sylvette the owl, and the Chemin des Animaux with its footprint hunt. Facing it, Vercorin lines up its treetop adventure park, its minigolf and the Sentier des Marmottes. Vissoie adds its open-air pool in the middle of the valley. And winter turns all of it into sledging country.

Getting there

Sierre railway station is the starting point. Postal buses climb the valley to Vissoie, then split towards Grimentz, Zinal, Saint-Luc and Chandolin; allow an hour to Grimentz. Vercorin is reached by gondola from Chalais, and Saint-Luc by its funicular from the village. By car, leave the A9 at Sierre and climb via Niouc.

Good to know: the road is narrow and very twisty for the first few kilometres. Children prone to travel sickness cope far better on the postal bus, where they can look straight ahead.

With toddlers

Grimentz keeps the essentials on flat ground: the Clos des Frès playground, the free pumptrack, the minigolf and the short, playful forest trail with Sylvette the owl. The Chemin des Animaux works as a footprint hunt and holds children's attention from three years old. The open-air pool at Vissoie is the valley's reference swim. The old village of Grimentz can be walked with a pushchair, as long as you avoid the steepest cobbled lanes.

Winter with the family

The Bendolla snow garden takes first steps on skis from age three. The Bendolla sledge run drops five kilometres, the Vercorin one two. The natural ice rink in Grimentz is free, and the Bendolla to Grimentz snowshoe trail offers a winter outing with no technical gear needed beyond a pair of rented snowshoes. For older children, the wooden velogemel sled at Bendolla starts at eleven, and the Snow Mountain Cart adds a faster descent on the same slopes.
