Jet d'Eau de Genève
Looking for a simple, spectacular outdoor outing with the children? The Jet d'Eau de Genève shoots its plume of water 140 metres above the bay. It's free, easy to reach beside Lake Geneva, and always impressive for young and old alike.
A Geneva icon beside the lake
It's hard to miss the Jet d'Eau when you arrive in Geneva. Set in the heart of the bay, on Lake Geneva, this column of water rises up to 140 metres high and can be seen from afar. It's one of the city's symbols, and one of the easiest outings to improvise with children: just stroll along the quays, look up and enjoy the show. No ticket, no booking, just a lovely walk by the water.
What your children will discover
Seen from below, the Jet d'Eau is always impressive. The water shoots up at high speed (around 200 km/h) and falls back as a fine mist that the wind sometimes carries onto the pier. Children love getting as close as possible along the walkway, feeling the droplets on their faces and watching the rainbows that form when the sun passes through the cloud of water. It's also a great chance to explain simply how the lake water is propelled so high into the sky.
What you do there and the atmosphere on site
The atmosphere is that of a classic, relaxed Geneva stroll. You walk along the Quai Gustave-Ador, watch the boats and the gulls, head out onto the pier to get close to the base of the jet (expect to get a little wet depending on the wind). All around, the Jardin anglais and its lawns, the flower clock and the lakeshore offer plenty to extend the outing. At nightfall, the Jet d'Eau is lit up and sometimes changes colour: a lovely moment to enjoy as a family.
Before you go
- Recommended age: from 3 years, and enjoyable at any age (strollers welcome).
- Duration: from a few minutes of watching from the quays to a walk of an hour or more.
- Booking: none to admire the jet. Paid guided tours do exist separately (see the official website).
- Accessibility: the quays are flat and stroller-accessible; the pier is reached on foot.
- Transport: TPG trams and buses, Rue du Lac stops (lines 2, 6, E, G) or Vollandes (lines E, G); the Mouettes genevoises also reach the shore (Eaux-Vives stop).
- What to bring: shoes that don't mind getting wet and a windbreaker if you go onto the pier; a hat and water in summer.
- Best season: possible all year round. The jet may be switched off in strong wind or severe cold; remember to check it's running before setting off.
Tips from parents
- Depending on the wind direction, the pier can get a real soaking: fun in warm weather, to be avoided with young children in severe cold.
- Keep the youngest by the hand near the water's edge.
- Combine the visit with the Jardin anglais and the flower clock, very close by, for a complete outing.
- In the evening, the illumination of the jet is worth the trip for a quiet stroll.
